Interiors How To,  Interiors On A Budget

A guide to second-hand shopping | Gumtree Edition

I’m not 100% sure if you’ve noticed yet or not but… I love Gumtree. The majority of my most loved possessions were purchased on Gumtree, including some AHmazing lamp shades that I bought a few days ago. The lovely old French lady told me the French word for the pattern on the lamp shade and it made me very happy (the fact that they we’re $10 each also made me very happy).

I’m very open about the fact that I shop second-hand on Gumtree regularly and I often get asked “What did you search for?” or “How did you even find this!?”. Well, today I’m here to open up the files on my Gumtree shopping hacks. I also do a lot of shopping on Facebook Marketplace & eBay but those are two different beasts that I’ll touch on in a later post.

I have 3 main Gumtree methods & tips for you:

Specific item searching | SCROLL WAY FURTHER DOWN THAN YOU NORMALLY WOULD

This is the most common way you would trawl through Gumtree. You’re trying to find a rustic outdoor table and you type into the search bar: “rustic outdoor dining table” and let the results roll in. This is great if you’re look for something particular and the search terms are relatively basic.

My biggest tip for this method is to scroll much further down than you can be bothered to, the oldest items will sink down, down, down to the bottom and you can find some really unique gems at the end of the list. These lower items will have been up for weeks and this means people will be more likely to negotiate with you (the train to bargain city has arrived).

General keyword searching | SEARCH FOR WORDS LIKE “RETRO” “VINTAGE” “COLOURFUL”

One of my favourite past-times when I wake up on a Saturday morning and I’m scrolling through Instagram and Facebook and reading my emails while I wait for my boyfriend to FINALLY wake up (6am on a Saturday is a reasonable wake up time, right?) is to jump over to my Gumtree app (yes, go download the Gumtree app – FOR GOD’S SAKE!!) and I type words like “retro” or “vintage” or “colourful” into the search bar. The results of these keywords means LOADS of random adverts for “a man and a van” or “apartment for lease” that you WERE NOT looking for. However, you’ll also find things you never realised you needed. Like once I found a set of vintage cutlery with bright blue handles that I very nearly drove to Cronulla to pick up (I thoroughly regret not making the trip). The potential treasure that’s waiting for you is endless.

Profile searching | BROWSE THROUGH SELLER PROFILES TO FIND HIDDEN TREASURE

This is more of a secondary searching method that I like to employ in my second-hand scavenging adventures. I’ll have found an item that I like and I can see glimpses of other items in the poorly taken photos and it dawns on me… this person is selling other things too! You can click on the seller profile and browse through all the items that they have for sale on Gumtree. This is one of the most lucrative ways of finding gold on Gumtree, you can find items that are on the verge of expiring that you had no intention of searching for specifically. Now, if you find more than 1 item that you want to buy from the same seller then you’ve got a heap of negotiating power on your side.

Until next time! xx
